Pulaski Therapy Dog Training
Therapy dogs provide invaluable emotional support to individuals facing disabilities, mental health issues, and other challenges. These dogs offer comfort and companionship, greatly improving the lives of those experiencing isolation or undergoing demanding treatments. Studies show that interacting with therapy dogs can significantly reduce stress and boost oxytocin levels, also known as the “happiness hormone.”
WHAT IS A THERAPY DOG?
Therapy dogs are invaluable in providing emotional support to individuals facing disabilities, mental health issues, and other challenging conditions. These dogs offer comfort and companionship, enhancing the lives of those who experience isolation or struggle with demanding treatments. The positive impact of therapy dogs is well-documented; research shows that interaction with a dog can significantly reduce stress and increase levels of oxytocin, known as the “happiness hormone.”
THERAPY VS. SERVICE DOGS
While both therapy and service dogs undergo extensive training, their roles differ significantly. Therapy dogs primarily offer emotional support and companionship in settings like rehabilitation sessions but do not perform complex tasks. Unlike service dogs, therapy dogs do not have the same access rights to public and private spaces. However, their presence in environments such as schools, hospitals, and senior homes can have profound benefits.
Preparing Your Dog for Therapy Roles
Our training program at Certified Canine Services starts with a four-week obedience course that lays the foundation for all subsequent therapy dog training. This stage establishes essential commands and behavior control, preparing your dog for their role as a therapy animal.
Following obedience training, we customize the program to suit the specific environments your therapy dog will serve in, such as educational settings, healthcare facilities, or private therapy practices. This specialization phase typically lasts two weeks, focusing on ensuring your dog remains calm and controlled in various situations—a crucial trait for a therapy dog.
PROGRAM DETAILS AND CERTIFICATION
A therapy dog must stay calm and composed in all situations, making their training vital. An inexperienced dog might become startled or aggressive, potentially disrupting a patient’s recovery.
Upon completion of our therapy canine programs, you and your dog will undergo the CGC test at our facility and receive an official certificate.
