Syracuse Therapy Dog Training
WHAT IS A THERAPY DOG?
Therapy dogs are invaluable in providing emotional support to individuals facing disabilities, mental health issues, and other challenging conditions. These dogs offer comfort and companionship, enhancing the lives of those who experience isolation or struggle with demanding treatments. The positive impact of therapy dogs is well-documented; research shows that interaction with a dog can significantly reduce stress and increase levels of oxytocin, known as the “happiness hormone.”
THERAPY VS. SERVICE DOGS
While both therapy and service dogs receive rigorous training, their roles are distinctly different. Therapy dogs primarily offer emotional support and companionship, helping in settings like rehabilitation sessions but not performing complex tasks. Unlike service dogs, who have specific rights to access public and private spaces, therapy dogs’ access is more limited. Despite these differences, the presence of a therapy dog can profoundly benefit environments such as schools, hospitals, and senior homes.
Priming Your Pup for Therapy Roles
Our training program at Certified Canine Services begins with a crucial four-week obedience course that lays the groundwork for all subsequent therapy and service dog training. This stage establishes essential commands and behavior control, preparing your dog for their role as a therapy animal.
Post-obedience, we tailor the training to the specific environments your therapy dog will serve, be it educational settings, healthcare facilities, or private therapy practices. This specialization phase typically spans two weeks, focusing on ensuring your dog remains calm and controlled in various situations, a vital trait for a therapy dog.
PROGRAM DETAILS AND CERTIFICATION
A therapy dog has to stay calm and composed, no matter what the situation entails. This is what makes their training so important. An inexperienced dog might become startled or aggressive, potentially disrupting a patient’s recovery. Upon completion of any of our therapy canine programs, you and your dog will undergo the CGC test at our facility and receive an official certificate.
